Sundowns Bounce Back from CAF Heartbreak to Reach Carling Knockout Quarter-Finals

Mamelodi Sundowns clinched a hard-earned 1-0 win against Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday, recovering from their exit in the CAF Champions League to move on to the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup, thanks to a 19th-minute goal from Siyanda Ndlovu.

The Brazilians managed to bounce back after their CAF Champions League disappointment against Wiliete SC, where they were eliminated on away goals, officially ending their chances of retaining the continental title.

What Instigated the Midfield Reshuffle for Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld?

Gallants had previously knocked out Sundowns in the last edition of the Carling Knockout Cup, triumphing 7-6 on penalties during an intense Round of 16 clash. Aiming for redemption, the hosts introduced several modifications to the starting line-up, pairing new acquisition Thabo Cele with Sphelele Mkhulise in midfield, filling in for regular starters Marcelo Allende and the injured Teboho Mokoena.

How Siyanda Ndlovu Sealed the Win for the Brazilians

The match started slowly, with both teams finding it challenging to establish their rhythm in the autumn chill. However, Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Siyanda Ndlovu unleashed a powerful shot from a difficult angle inside the box, beating goalkeeper Kagisho Mlambo and energizing the home fans.

Gallants nearly levelled the score in the 28th minute, but Sundowns’ steadfast defense and goalkeeper Ricardo Goss denied Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo’s attempts twice in quick succession. The Chloorkop-based team maintained control of possession as the first half wore on, leading 1-0 at halftime.

The second half commenced with Gallants striving to find an equalizer, but they faced misfortune in the final third.

Sundowns also struggled to convert their opportunities, coming close on multiple occasions. Substitute Nuno Santos squandered a significant chance to extend the lead in the 74th minute, shooting over from inside the box.

Despite late pressure from the visitors, Sundowns remained resolute to claim the 1-0 victory. The Brazilians will await their quarter-final opponents following the draw, scheduled to take place after Wednesday’s clash between Durban City and Stellenbosch at Chatsworth Stadium.
