Aston Villa delivered one of the biggest results of the Premier League season after beating Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday.
Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Unai Emery’s side, while Erling Haaland’s second-half header proved insufficient for City. The defeat ended the visitors’ perfect start after seven consecutive league victories under Enzo Maresca.
City dominated possession and created several chances. However, Villa defended with discipline, attacked quickly and punished two costly mistakes to claim their first home league victory of the season.
Villa made an aggressive start and opened the scoring after only six minutes.
Manchester City defender Marc Guéhi took a heavy touch while attempting to build from the back. Villa captain John McGinn immediately collected the loose ball before releasing Jackson into the penalty area.
The Senegalese striker cut inside Elliot Anderson and calmly fired beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma. The early goal lifted the Villa Park crowd and forced City to chase the match almost immediately.
City responded by taking control of possession. Iliman Ndiaye tested goalkeeper Zion Suzuki after cutting inside from the right, while Rayan Cherki also forced an important save.
Ndiaye then came even closer when his effort struck the foot of the post. Despite City’s growing pressure, Villa remained dangerous whenever they broke forward.
Rúben Dias produced an excellent tackle to prevent Alysson from potentially doubling Villa’s advantage before halftime.
Suzuki played a major role in Villa’s victory, producing several important saves against a Manchester City team that spent long periods around the home penalty area.
The Japanese goalkeeper denied Cherki, Ndiaye and Joško Gvardiol at crucial moments.
Meanwhile, Villa’s defenders matched City’s intensity. Matty Cash dealt impressively with Jérémy Doku, preventing the winger from consistently turning and attacking the space behind him.
Villa’s work without the ball unsettled the league leaders. The hosts made more tackles during the first half than they had managed in the opening half of any Premier League match across this season and the previous campaign.
Although City controlled the ball, Villa controlled many of the decisive moments.
Maresca made two changes at halftime, introducing Phil Foden and Rico Lewis for Cherki and Guéhi. Both departing players had received yellow cards during the opening period.
City’s improved approach produced an equaliser seven minutes after the restart.
Ndiaye delivered an excellent cross following a cleverly worked free-kick, and Haaland rose above the Villa defence to power his header beyond Suzuki.
The goal was Haaland’s ninth of the Premier League campaign and appeared to have shifted the contest firmly in City’s favour.
Moments later, Suzuki tipped Gvardiol’s effort onto the crossbar. Villa suddenly found themselves under sustained pressure as City pushed for a second goal.
However, instead of collapsing, Emery’s team struck again.
Jackson restored Villa’s advantage on the hour following a devastating counterattack.
The striker initially helped start the move before substitute Ibrahim Mbaye raced down the right wing. Mbaye cut the ball back into the penalty area, where Jackson met it with a first-time shot from about 15 yards.
Donnarumma got down to the effort but failed to prevent it from slipping underneath him and crossing the line.
The goal completed Jackson’s brace and continued his outstanding form. He has now scored six times in his last six appearances for Villa.
City threw players forward during the closing stages, but Suzuki continued to frustrate the visitors. Ian Maatsen also produced a vital late clearance to prevent Haaland’s goal-bound header from finding the net.
Villa survived the final pressure and celebrated a memorable victory in front of their home supporters.
Despite the defeat, Maresca believed City had created enough opportunities to take something from the match.
City finished with 63% possession and repeatedly entered Villa’s penalty area. However, their failure to convert that pressure proved costly.
Maresca said his players needed to become more clinical while also defending transitions more effectively. He refused to blame Guéhi for the opening goal and explained that the defender’s halftime substitution was influenced by his yellow card.
City captain Dias admitted the result was frustrating. He praised his team’s effort but acknowledged that Villa had been extremely efficient during two counterattacks.
Manchester City remain at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference. However, Arsenal moved level with them on 21 points after beating Everton 2-0.
Therefore, City’s previously comfortable position has disappeared after eight matches.
Aston Villa climbed to sixth with 11 points. The victory was also their fourth consecutive win in all competitions and extended their impressive recent record against City at Villa Park.
Maresca’s side must now regroup before hosting Brighton and Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday, 28 October.
Villa, meanwhile, can take confidence from a performance that combined defensive organisation, hard running and ruthless finishing.
Final score: Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester City
