Erling Haaland scored his fifth goal in three Premier League meetings with Ipswich Town to restore Manchester City’s lead over the visitors at half-time at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Phil Foden fired in from Jeremy Doku’s cross to put City on course to extend their perfect start to the league season to seven matches, but Daizen Maeda coolly slotted in to draw Ipswich level as part of a slick counter-attack.
Mateo Kovacic then scooped in a delivery for Haaland to power a header past Christian Walton, hitting the grounded goalkeeper on its way in.
Former Ireland forward Clinton Morrison felt Walton, who beat away an early Nico O’Reilly drive, could have stopped Haaland’s goal.
“Walton should most definitely have done better,” Morrison told Sky Sports. “He gets a hand to it and knocks it in with his other hand. He really should be saving that.”
The Cityzens suffered their first defeat of the season in all competitions with a 4-2 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Ipswich began on nine points and have won their last two matches, beating Crystal Palace 3-2 away and prevailing 2-1 at home to Fulham last Saturday.
