South African coach Reneilwe Letsholonyane continued his impressive start in Botswana after guiding Mochudi Centre Chiefs into the semi-finals of the African Hero Top 8 tournament this past weekend.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs, popularly known as Maaparankwe, secured their place in the last four with a convincing 3-1 victory over Morupule Wanderers at the National Stadium in Gaborone. The result marked another positive step for Letsholonyane as he continues to build momentum with the Botswana club.
The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana midfielder returned to Botswana in September and has enjoyed a promising start to his coaching career with the team. His side has shown good form in recent matches, with consecutive league victories followed by success in the cup competition.
Last week, Letsholonyane guided Mochudi Centre Chiefs to back-to-back wins in the Botswana Premier League. He then carried that momentum into the African Hero Top 8, where his team produced another strong performance to keep their hopes of winning silverware alive this season.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs took the lead against Morupule Wanderers in the 26th minute through former Cape Town Spurs striker Mpho Kgaswane. The early goal gave the team a positive start and helped them take control of the match.
After the break, Maaparankwe continued to push forward and doubled their advantage in the 70th minute. Kelvin Ndebelele scored the second goal, with Kgaswane providing the assist to complete an important contribution to the team's performance.
Morupule Wanderers managed to pull a goal back later in the match, putting some pressure on Letsholonyane’s side as they looked to protect their lead. However, Mochudi Centre Chiefs remained determined to finish the job and avoid a late setback.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 87th minute when Argentinian forward Nicolas Melgajero scored the third goal. His strike secured the 3-1 victory and confirmed Mochudi Centre Chiefs’ place in the semi-finals.
The win will give Letsholonyane and his players confidence ahead of their next assignment in the Botswana Premier League. They are scheduled to face Jwaneng Galaxy on Wednesday, 28 October, in a match that could provide another opportunity to strengthen their position on the standings.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs currently occupy fourth place on the league table with 10 points, five points behind leaders Gaborone United. Letsholonyane will be hoping his team can maintain its winning form as the season continues and compete for honours in both the league and cup competitions.
