Former Bafana Bafana coach Augusto Palacios has welcomed the appointment of South African football icon Doctor “16V” Khumalo to the South African Football Association (SAFA) technical committee.
Palacios, who previously worked with Khumalo at both Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs, has expressed his support for the decision to bring the former midfielder into SAFA’s technical structures. His endorsement comes as discussions grow around how Khumalo’s experience and knowledge could contribute to the development of South African football.
Khumalo remains one of the country's most celebrated football personalities, having established himself as a household name through his performances for Kaizer Chiefs and the national team. His creativity, technical ability and influence on the pitch earned him widespread recognition throughout his playing career.
The former midfielder enjoyed a particularly successful association with Kaizer Chiefs, where he became a favourite among supporters. He also represented Bafana Bafana during an important period in the country's football history.
One of the highlights of Khumalo's international career came in 1996, when South Africa won the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. The historic achievement remains a defining moment for the national team and South African football as a whole.
His experience at both club and international level could prove useful in his new position within SAFA's technical committee. The committee plays a role in discussions surrounding coaching, player development, technical standards and the broader direction of football in the country.
Palacios' support carries particular significance because of his previous working relationship with Khumalo. Having coached him at both club and national-team level, the former Bafana Bafana mentor has firsthand experience of the football knowledge the legendary midfielder possesses.
Khumalo's appointment also highlights the potential benefits of involving former professional players in football administration. Their experience of competing at the highest level can provide valuable perspectives on the challenges facing players, coaches and development structures.
South African football continues to work towards improving coaching standards, strengthening youth development and creating clearer pathways for emerging talent to reach professional football.
As a member of the technical committee, Khumalo will have an opportunity to contribute to discussions and initiatives aimed at addressing these challenges.
Palacios' backing adds to the attention surrounding Khumalo's appointment, with the former Bafana Bafana star now expected to bring his experience and understanding of the game to SAFA's technical structures.
