Cristiano Ronaldo Handed 30-Day Suspension and €255 Fine by Portugal FA

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portuguese Football Federation after leaving the national team camp without permission following a disagreement over his role in the squad.

The disciplinary decision follows an incident in which the Portugal captain departed the team's base in Copenhagen ahead of their UEFA Nations League match against Denmark. The situation reportedly stemmed from his frustration after being left on the bench during Portugal's match against Norway and subsequently learning that he would not start against Denmark.

Ronaldo reportedly felt that head coach Jorge Jesus had failed to honour assurances concerning his playing time. Jesus, however, denied that he had made such an agreement with the veteran forward, although he left the door open for Ronaldo's return to the squad.

The Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary council upheld the charge against the 41-year-old forward, ruling that he had deliberately committed an offence under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations. The punishment includes a 30-day suspension and a financial penalty of €255.

Following the incident, Ronaldo acknowledged his mistake and apologised for leaving his teammates and failing to acknowledge supporters after the match against Norway. He also made it clear that he remained available for Portugal after serving any disciplinary punishment.

Despite the sanction, the suspension is not expected to affect Portugal's upcoming Nations League fixtures. Reports indicate that Ronaldo had already served 19 days of the ban, with the suspension expected to be completed before the team's next international matches in November. However, the federation's ruling did not initially clarify every detail concerning the calculation of the suspension.

Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença has also expressed a desire to see Ronaldo return to the national team once the matter is resolved. The forward remains one of Portugal's most important players, holding the country's records for international appearances and goals.
