Chiefs Youngster Reveals How Pirates Captain Sibisi Inspired His Fight for First-Team Football
Kaizer Chiefs youngster Xolani Cossa has revealed how Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has inspired him to remain determined in his pursuit of a regular first-team place at Naturena, despite the challenges facing his promising football career.
In a surprising revelation that highlights how inspiration can cross the boundaries of South African football's fiercest rivalry, Cossa explained how watching Sibisi overcome criticism has strengthened his belief that he can also silence his doubters and establish himself at the highest level.
The 22-year-old defender is currently on loan at Gomora United in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, where he is gaining valuable experience as he continues working towards his long-term ambition of representing the Chiefs senior team.
Speaking to FARPost, Cossa admitted that Sibisi's journey has given him a different perspective on the difficulties young footballers encounter while attempting to prove themselves.
"I have seen the likes of Sibisi [Nkosinathi] from Orlando Pirates. That guy has given me much aspiration to say anything is possible. He once faced doubters in his career, and now he is showing them what he's capable of," Cossa explained.
The young defender added that observing Sibisi during friendly matches between Gomora United and Orlando Pirates allowed him to appreciate how the experienced centre-back handles pressure and criticism on the pitch.
Sibisi's journey at Pirates has not always been straightforward. The Bucs captain previously faced criticism from sections of the club's supporters and struggled to establish himself as an undisputed starter under former coach Jose Riveiro.
However, his persistence eventually paid dividends. He became an increasingly important figure under Abdeslam Ouaddou, helping Pirates enjoy a successful 2025/26 campaign and demonstrating the importance of mental strength in professional football.
For Cossa, that example offers valuable motivation as he attempts to take the next step in his own development.
The Chiefs academy product spent the 2025/26 season with Botswana's Black Lions FC before returning to South Africa for another loan spell, this time with Gomora United.
Although he had hoped to remain with Amakhosi for the 2026/27 campaign, the latest move provides another opportunity to improve his defensive abilities, gain regular playing time and demonstrate his readiness for top-flight football.
Cossa understands that earning promotion to the Chiefs senior team will require consistent performances and a strong mentality.
"Every team has people who doubt and doubt your job. I need to be careful and show that I'm ready," he added.
His immediate priority is to make the most of his time at Gomora United and convince the Chiefs technical team that he deserves an opportunity when he returns to Naturena.
With Sibisi's story serving as motivation, Cossa will hope that patience, hard work and determination can eventually turn his first-team dream into reality.
