Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Sifiso Myeni has called on the club to give Sebastian Pedersen more playing time, arguing that the Norwegian striker deserves a fair opportunity to prove his worth under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Pedersen joined the Buccaneers from Norwegian club Sogndal during the off-season, signing a two-year contract. However, the 27-year-old has struggled to secure a regular place in the team, with his appearances limited since arriving in South Africa.
Before joining Pirates, Pedersen reportedly scored 51 goals in 117 matches, a record that raised expectations about what he could offer the Soweto-based club. His previous performances suggested that he could become a valuable addition to the team's attacking department.
Despite those numbers, the striker has not received an extended run of games to demonstrate his abilities. His limited involvement has prompted questions from some supporters about why he has not been given more opportunities to establish himself.
Speaking on Omni Audio Africa, Myeni questioned the situation and urged Ouaddou to give Pedersen a fair chance, pointing out that other forwards have had opportunities to feature for the team.
According to Myeni, players such as Evidence Makgopa, Boitumelo Radiopane and Yanela Mbuthuma have been given chances to contribute, while Pedersen has had limited opportunities to make an impression.
The former Pirates midfielder believes the Norwegian striker should also be allowed to play more regularly so that the technical team can properly evaluate his abilities.
However, Pedersen's lack of game time does not necessarily indicate that the coaching staff have lost confidence in him. Ouaddou previously suggested that the forward needed time to improve his fitness and adjust to his new environment.
Moving to another country and adapting to a different league can present challenges for any footballer. Pedersen must familiarise himself with Pirates' tactical approach, build an understanding with his teammates and adjust to the demands of South African football.
Nevertheless, Myeni believes the striker deserves more than occasional appearances if he is to demonstrate why the club signed him.
Giving Pedersen additional minutes could help the coaching staff determine whether he can become a dependable option in attack. Regular involvement could also improve his confidence and allow him to demonstrate the finishing ability reflected in his previous goalscoring record.
As competition for places continues at Orlando Pirates, the decision ultimately rests with Ouaddou and his technical team. Supporters will be watching to see whether the coach gives the Norwegian forward a bigger role in upcoming matches.
Do you agree with Sifiso Myeni? Should Orlando Pirates give Sebastian Pedersen more playing time to prove himself?
