South African football fans have been touched by an emotional tribute to the late Jayden Adams, who was honoured during the prestigious 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on Monday, 26 October.
The former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was remembered during a special tribute celebrating football figures who passed away this year. His inclusion in the ceremony was a significant moment for South African football, recognising his contribution to the game and the memories he left behind.
Adams died in July 2026 at the age of 25, just weeks after representing South Africa at the FIFA World Cup. His passing was a devastating loss for the local football community, particularly for supporters who had followed his journey from a promising young talent to an established professional footballer.
During the tribute, Adams was remembered alongside internationally recognised football figures, including former Ballon d’Or winner Kevin Keegan and Italian football legend Franco Baresi.
His appearance in the remembrance segment highlighted the impact he made during his career, despite his life being cut short at such a young age.
Adams began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025. His performances earned him recognition as one of South Africa's promising midfielders, while his national team appearances allowed him to represent the country on football's biggest stage.
He made his Bafana Bafana debut in 2022 and went on to earn 13 international caps, scoring twice for the national team. He also helped Sundowns achieve success in continental football.
For many South Africans, seeing Adams remembered at one of football's biggest international ceremonies was an emotional moment. It demonstrated that his contribution to the sport extended beyond national borders.
Although he is no longer with us, his performances and memories will remain part of South African football history.
May Jayden Adams continue to rest in peace. His name and contribution to South African football will not be forgotten.
