South African football could receive a significant financial boost if FIFA approves a proposal to increase funding for its member associations. Under the plan, the South African Football Association (SAFA) could receive approximately R411 million to support football development between 2027 and 2030.
The proposal, introduced by FIFA’s administration through the FIFA Surplus Solidarity Programme, aims to increase the allocation for each member association to $25 million, equivalent to around R411 million.
This would represent a substantial increase from the earlier proposed allocation of $10 million, estimated at approximately R164 million per association over the same four-year period.
If approved, the additional funding could help SAFA strengthen football development across the country. Potential areas of investment include grassroots football, improved sporting facilities, better coaching programmes and initiatives designed to identify and develop young talent.
Youth development remains a key priority for South African football, with continued efforts to discover promising players and prepare them for professional competition. Increased financial resources could help expand existing development programmes, improve training conditions and provide more opportunities for aspiring footballers.
The proposal is also likely to attract attention from supporters of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), where clubs and academies play an important role in developing professional players. However, the proposed funding would be allocated directly to SAFA as FIFA's member association, meaning PSL clubs would not automatically receive a share of the money.
The potential benefits for domestic football would depend on how SAFA chooses to use the funds, the final conditions attached to the programme and the development projects prioritised for investment.
Despite the possible financial boost, FIFA has not yet formally approved the proposal. The organisation's administration is expected to present the plan for consideration at the 77th FIFA Congress, scheduled to take place in March 2027.
Until a final decision is made, the proposed R411 million allocation remains subject to approval.
