Former Orlando Pirates development coach Joseph Makhanya, popularly known as Duku Duku, has returned to the spotlight following his departure from Pele Pele FC, leaving football supporters wondering what the future holds for the respected South African football figure.
Makhanya joined the Orlando Pirates feeder team in September 2025 after gaining valuable experience working with the club's DStv Diski Challenge reserve side. His appointment was aimed at developing young players and helping the team achieve its promotion ambitions in the ABC Motsepe League. However, his time with Pele Pele FC has now come to an end.
The former coach built a strong reputation during his time in the Pirates development structures, where he played an important role in identifying and nurturing promising young footballers. Several players who benefited from the club's development system, including Mohau Nkota, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Relebohile Mofokeng, have progressed to senior football and attracted attention for their performances.
Makhanya has consistently emphasised the importance of preparing young players for professional football rather than focusing exclusively on immediate results. His approach has centred on developing technical ability, tactical understanding and the mentality required to succeed at the highest level.
His knowledge of emerging talent was again evident in October 2026 when he discussed Pirates midfielder Simphiwe Masilela, highlighting the player's versatility and potential that had been visible from an early age.
Makhanya was not the only familiar face to leave Pele Pele FC. Former Pirates midfielder and assistant coach Issa Sarr also departed, prompting changes within the club's technical structures. Vincent Rammoni subsequently took charge of the ABC Motsepe League side for the 2026/27 period.
Although Makhanya's next destination remains unclear, his experience as a professional footballer and youth development coach makes him a valuable figure in South African football.
Whether he returns to academy coaching or pursues another opportunity, supporters will be watching closely to see where his next chapter takes him.
