Orlando Pirates have secured their place in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stage after all 16 qualifying teams were confirmed following the conclusion of the second preliminary round on Sunday, 25 October 2026.
The Buccaneers booked their place in the next phase in impressive fashion, defeating Namibian side African Stars 4-0 in the second leg to complete a commanding 5-0 aggregate victory. The result underlined Pirates' determination to compete against Africa's best clubs as they pursue continental success this season.
However, South African football suffered a major setback after defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were eliminated by Angola's Wiliete SC. Despite drawing the second leg 1-1, Sundowns were knocked out after the tie ended level on aggregate, with Wiliete advancing under the away-goals rule. Their elimination leaves Pirates carrying South Africa's hopes in the competition.
The 16 qualified teams include Simba SC and Young Africans from Tanzania, Egypt's Pyramids FC and Zamalek SC, Angola's Petro de Luanda and Wiliete SC, and Tunisia's Espérance de Tunis and Club Africain. Other qualifiers are MC Alger, Horoya AC, RS Berkane, Colombe Sportive, Al Hilal, MAS de Fès and FC Nouadhibou.
The lineup promises an exciting group-stage campaign, with several established continental contenders expected to challenge for the title. Colombe Sportive of Cameroon have also secured a historic first appearance in the group stage, adding another interesting storyline to the competition.
Attention now turns to the group-stage draw scheduled for Wednesday, 28 October 2026, when Pirates will discover their opponents.
For the Soweto giants, the draw represents the next important step in their continental campaign. With Sundowns eliminated, expectations will increase as Pirates prepare to face some of Africa's strongest teams and attempt to make a deep run in the tournament.
