Mamelodi Sundowns have received encouraging news about midfielder Teboho Mokoena after head coach Miguel Cardoso provided an update on the Bafana Bafana international’s injury ahead of their CAF Champions League encounter against Wiliete SC.
Mokoena missed Wednesday morning’s first-team training session, raising questions about his availability for Friday night’s second preliminary round return leg against the Angolan side at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Cardoso has since explained that the midfielder is dealing with the same injury he sustained while representing South Africa during the previous international break.
According to the Portuguese tactician, Mokoena suffered a strain to the inner ligament of his leg following contact with an opponent. Although the incident was accidental, the midfielder required further medical attention.
Cardoso clarified that the problem was not a new injury and expressed optimism about the player’s recovery.
The coach also indicated that the injury was not serious, although Sundowns will need to evaluate Mokoena’s condition before deciding whether he can participate in Friday’s match.
If the midfielder is unavailable, Cardoso has several alternatives, including Thabo Cele, Marcelo Allende, Sphelele Mkhulise, Gomolemo Kekana, Katlego Ntsabeleng and new signing Lazola Maku.
Bathusi Aubaas remains sidelined after picking up an injury while on international duty.
Cardoso acknowledged that Sundowns are currently without several important players, including Khuliso Mudau, Keanu Cupido, Grant Kekana and Ronwen Williams.
Nevertheless, he believes the squad has enough depth to cope with these absences and deliver the required performances.
Sundowns will now focus on securing qualification for the next round of the CAF Champions League, while hoping Mokoena recovers in time to contribute to their continental ambitions.
