Sekhukhune United head coach Papi Zothwane is hoping to use his previous Carling Knockout Cup success with Magesi FC as inspiration as Babina Noko prepare for a challenging last-16 encounter against Richards Bay.

The coach knows what it takes to reach the final and lift the trophy, having been part of Clinton Larsen’s technical team when Magesi FC made history in 2024. The Limpopo-based outfit stunned South African football by defeating Mamelodi Sundowns in the final to claim the Carling Knockout title.

That memorable achievement remains an important experience for Zothwane, who now wants to pass those lessons on to his current players at Sekhukhune United. He believes his experience of competing for silverware can help the squad develop the belief and determination needed to produce a successful cup campaign.

Speaking about the influence his previous achievement could have on his players, Zothwane explained that he intends to share the memories and emotions associated with reaching a final and defeating one of Africa’s biggest clubs.

“From my experience, it has to rub off on the team, the players, share the memories, and the feeling of going to a final and even winning it, against one of the biggest teams in Africa – so I will definitely push my team to see the possibility of going to the final,” Zothwane said.

His message reflects Sekhukhune United’s ambition to compete for honours this season. However, the coach understands that winning a knockout competition requires consistency, discipline and the ability to overcome difficult opponents at every stage.

Richards Bay Stand Between Sekhukhune and the Next Round

Despite his desire to guide Sekhukhune United towards the final, Zothwane is not underestimating Richards Bay. The upcoming last-16 fixture presents another challenge, with both teams eager to continue their journey in the competition.

The coach has emphasised that his players must concentrate on the immediate task rather than become distracted by thoughts of lifting the trophy. According to Zothwane, the team must win one match at a time if they want to turn their ambition into reality.

“But it goes by winning one game at a time, and we’re now playing against Richards Bay – a tough opponent, it’s nice to win a cup, so as a team we have an ambition to win a trophy and Black Label gives us an opportunity to do that,” he added.

Zothwane also stressed the importance of respecting their opponents and approaching the encounter with the necessary caution. His experience with Magesi may provide valuable motivation, but Sekhukhune will still need to deliver a strong performance on the pitch.

“We will approach this fixture with caution and respect of the opposition we’re playing against, and we hope to go to the next round,” he concluded.

For Sekhukhune United, the Carling Knockout represents an opportunity to pursue silverware and create their own memorable moment. Zothwane will hope the lessons from Magesi’s remarkable 2024 triumph can help his current squad believe in their potential.

However, Richards Bay remain the immediate obstacle, and Babina Noko must first negotiate this difficult fixture before they can begin thinking about the quarter-finals and the possibility of lifting the trophy.

Can Papi Zothwane use his cup-winning experience to inspire Sekhukhune United to Carling Knockout glory? Their journey continues with a crucial test against Richards Bay.
