Wiliete SC knocks out Sundowns - first-time Champions League spot despite immigration woes (Bianchi)

Wiliete SC, a relatively new club established in 2018, has achieved a remarkable feat in the CAF Champions League, securing qualification for the group stages after a stunning victory over Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Angolan side’s success represents a significant step in their development, both domestically within the Girabola league and on the broader African football stage.

This result, however, was far from straightforward, highlighting the challenges faced by smaller clubs competing against established giants.

The circumstances surrounding the match itself were notably complex.

According to coach Roberto Bianchi, the team faced considerable disruption prior to the game, with three players unable to participate due to immigration issues at OR Tambo International Airport.

Bianchi emphasized the importance of this victory, stating, “What we did is very good for the club, the growth of a new club, it has been step by step, not only here in the CAF Champions League, also at home in the Girabola, this game has big value because of the size of the rival Mamelodi Sundowns we overcame.” Despite these hurdles, the team’s resilience shone through, ultimately leading to a decisive win.

While acknowledging the significance of eliminating a team of Sundowns’ stature, Bianchi remained grounded, stressing that qualification for the group stages merely represents the initial phase of Williete’s ambitions for the season.

The coach believes the accomplishment will undoubtedly bolster the confidence of his players, particularly as they continue their campaign in the Girabola league, where they currently hold the top position.

This victory is expected to translate into increased recognition for the club, transforming Williete from an unknown entity into a respected competitor within the African football landscape.

The upcoming group stage draw, scheduled for Wednesday, will see Williete alongside Petro de Luanda as Angolan representatives.

The team’s performance against Sundowns has undoubtedly raised the profile of Angolan football and positioned Williete SC as a force to be reckoned with.

It is clear that this unexpected triumph is not just a victory for Williete, but a testament to the potential for growth and success within the smaller clubs of the continent.

The club’s journey is just beginning, and the world will be watching to see how far they can go.
