Wiliete SC head coach Roberto Bianchi has revealed that his team faced unexpected travel difficulties before their CAF Champions League clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, with three players unable to feature because of immigration issues at OR Tambo International Airport.
Despite the setback, the Angolan club produced a result that will be remembered as a significant milestone in their development, eliminating one of Africa's most established sides from the continental competition.
Bianchi explained that the problems occurred a day before the match and affected three members of his squad.
“The day before, we had immigration issues at OR Tambo, a few players, three players couldn’t make it to the game,” the Wiliete coach said, as reported by iDiski Times.
The revelation adds another layer to Wiliete's achievement, with the club managing to overcome Sundowns despite not having their full squad available.
Sundowns entered the tie with considerable continental experience and expectations of progressing further in the competition. However, Wiliete proved difficult to overcome across the two legs, ultimately ending the South African club's campaign.
For Wiliete, the elimination represents more than a memorable result against a prominent African opponent. It provides evidence of the progress the Angolan side believes it is making as it seeks to establish itself at a higher level of continental football.
Bianchi's comments also highlight the challenges smaller clubs can encounter when travelling for international competitions. Immigration complications can disrupt preparations, limit squad selection and force coaches to adjust their plans at short notice.
Wiliete had to deal with those circumstances before facing a Sundowns team accustomed to competing against strong opposition in the CAF Champions League.
Nevertheless, the Angolan side took advantage of the opportunity and secured their place in the next stage, while Sundowns were left to reflect on an early continental exit.
The result is particularly significant for Wiliete because beating a club with Sundowns' resources and experience offers an important benchmark for its ambitions. Progress in continental competitions can also strengthen a team's reputation and provide valuable experience for future campaigns.
For Sundowns, the elimination raises questions about their performance in a competition they have regularly targeted. Their failure to progress will increase scrutiny on the team's ability to turn its domestic strength into consistent continental success.
Wiliete, meanwhile, can take confidence from the achievement as it continues its development.
Although Bianchi acknowledged the absence of three players, his side's progression remains the central story. The coach will hope the experience provides a foundation for further growth and encourages his squad to believe it can compete against Africa's leading clubs.
Wiliete's elimination of Sundowns is therefore a major moment for the Angolan club, achieved despite the disruption to its preparations and the absence of three players.
