Mamelodi Sundowns Reportedly Prepare to Sack Miguel Cardoso After Champions League Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns could be preparing for a major coaching shakeup, with head coach Miguel Cardoso reportedly facing an uncertain future following the club’s disappointing elimination from the CAF Champions League against Angolan side Wiliete SC.

The Brazilians entered the competition with high expectations but suffered an unexpected setback that has allegedly prompted the club’s management to reconsider its technical direction. The early continental exit has increased pressure on Cardoso, with questions emerging about his ability to meet the club’s demanding standards.

According to reports, Cardoso’s management team is expected to meet with Sundowns officials to discuss the possibility of terminating his contract. Discussions surrounding his potential departure are reportedly progressing, although the club has yet to make an official announcement confirming the coach’s future.

Should Sundowns decide to part ways with the Portuguese tactician, attention could quickly shift towards appointing an interim coaching structure to guide the team through the transition while protecting its domestic ambitions.

Assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly emerged as a possible candidate for the temporary position. His familiarity with the club’s environment and experience in South African football could make him a suitable option during a period of uncertainty.

Former Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has also been mentioned as a potential replacement. His reported departure from Tanzanian club Young Africans SC has fuelled speculation about a possible return to Chloorkop.

A reunion between Mngqithi and Komphela could appeal to supporters, given their previous working relationship and contributions to Sundowns’ domestic success.

However, neither appointment has been confirmed, and the club’s final decision will depend on the outcome of discussions surrounding Cardoso’s position.

For Sundowns, the immediate priority remains restoring stability and maintaining their pursuit of domestic silverware. With expectations exceptionally high at Chloorkop, the coming days could prove crucial in determining the club’s coaching direction and its plans for the remainder of the season.
