Kaizer Chiefs Offered Chance to Sign Bafana Bafana Star Elias Mokwana for Free

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly been handed an opportunity to sign Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana after his proposed move to Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club collapsed.

Khune urges Kaizer Chiefs to sign Elias Mokwana

The 27-year-old attacker has returned to South Africa as a free agent following his departure from Tunisian giants Esperance, potentially opening the door for a return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

According to SABC Sport journalist Mazola Molefe, Mokwana has been offered to Amakhosi, although it remains unclear whether the Soweto giants will pursue a deal.

"I've been told that Elias Mokwana has been offered to Kaizer Chiefs after his move to Wydad collapsed. It remains to be seen if he would be signed by the club," Molefe reported.

The development could present Chiefs with an opportunity to strengthen their attacking options without paying a transfer fee, provided the club decides to formalise its interest in the Bafana Bafana international.

Mokwana established himself as an exciting attacking talent during his time at Sekhukhune United, where his performances attracted interest from clubs beyond South Africa's borders.

His impressive displays earned him a move to Esperance in 2024, marking a significant step in his career as he ventured into North African football.

The winger also spent time on loan in the Saudi Arabia Pro League before returning to Esperance for the 2025/26 season.

His return to the South African transfer market could attract interest from local clubs looking to strengthen their squads ahead of upcoming competitions.

Former Premier Soccer League midfielder Mark Haskins believes Mokwana would be a valuable addition to the Kaizer Chiefs squad should the club decide to sign him.

"I like him and definitely believe he will add value to that Kaizer Chiefs team," Haskins said.

He added that he had been surprised when Mokwana left South Africa without attracting stronger interest from the country's biggest clubs.

"I was actually shocked that he left the country without being pursued by some of the giants of local football. He was fantastic at Sekhukhune before leaving the country," Haskins added.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has previously indicated a desire to strengthen his team's attacking department, making Mokwana a potential option as the club evaluates its squad.

However, Amakhosi already have several wide players competing for places, including Faiz Abrahams, Wandile Duba, Pule Mmodi, Asanele Velebayi and Langelihle Phili.

Mokwana's preferred position is on the right wing, where his arrival could provide additional competition and depth.

His experience in international football could also benefit the squad, particularly as Chiefs look to improve their performances and compete for silverware.

Nevertheless, signing another winger would require the club to assess its existing options and determine whether Mokwana fits into Da Cruz's plans.

For now, the reported offer gives Chiefs an opportunity to consider the Bafana Bafana star's availability, but no agreement has been confirmed between the player and the club.

Whether Amakhosi decide to move for Mokwana following the collapse of his proposed transfer to Wydad Athletic Club remains to be seen.
