Stripped of Cash & Banned: Ex-Pirates Star Mbokazi Receives Devastating News in the US

Why MLS Set to Deduct R4,000 From Mbokazi's Account

MLS Sanctions Await Mbokazi After Yellow Card Trouble as Chicago Fire Prepare for Griezmann Test

South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi is set to face disciplinary consequences after accumulating yellow cards in Major League Soccer (MLS), with the Chicago Fire star also ruled out of his team's upcoming encounter against Orlando City.

The former Orlando Pirates defender will miss the fixture after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season during Chicago Fire's 3-2 victory over Atlanta United on Saturday, October 24. The suspension is a setback for the young centre-back, who has been working to establish himself in American football following his move from South Africa.

Mbokazi was booked in the 81st minute against Atlanta, triggering a one-match suspension under the league's disciplinary rules. The MLS disciplinary summary subsequently listed him among the players suspended for the October 28 meeting with Orlando City.

The reported R4,000 fine adds another financial consequence to the disciplinary situation. However, the official MLS disciplinary notice confirms the suspension for yellow-card accumulation, rather than specifying a fine of that amount. The exact financial penalty should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless further official details are released.

Mbokazi's absence comes at an important stage of Chicago Fire's campaign as the club looks to maintain its position among the leading teams in the Eastern Conference. The defender has made a positive contribution since returning from a thigh injury, recording 40 clearances, 10 tackles and four blocks across six MLS appearances, according to available player statistics.

The 20-year-old's progress has attracted attention in South Africa, where he previously represented Orlando Pirates before securing his move to the United States. Chicago Fire announced his signing in December 2025, with his contract running through 2029 and an option for the following season.

Mbokazi's suspension means Chicago will have to reorganise its defence for a challenging meeting with Orlando City, who have French international Antoine Griezmann among their attacking options. The fixture presents an opportunity for other defenders to step forward and help the team maintain its recent momentum.

Despite the setback, Mbokazi will be eager to return to action quickly and continue building his reputation in MLS. Avoiding further unnecessary bookings will also be important as he adapts to the demands of American football.

For South African supporters following his journey abroad, the immediate focus will be on how Chicago cope without him and whether the young defender can resume his progress after serving his suspension.
