“Bloemfontein Loves Football!” Desiree Ellis Sends Heartfelt Message to Banyana Banyana Supporters After Olympic Qualifying Triumph
Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has expressed her gratitude to the football supporters in Bloemfontein after South Africa secured an emphatic victory over Madagascar in the second leg of their 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifying campaign.
The South African senior women's national team delivered a convincing 3-0 victory at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday, 13 October, completing a dominant 7-0 aggregate win to book their place in the third round of the qualifiers.
Ellis was particularly pleased with the atmosphere created by the home supporters, who turned out to cheer on the team after the opening encounter had been played behind closed doors.
“We knew that the fans of Bloemfontein would come out because they love football,” Ellis said, expressing her appreciation for the support the team received throughout the match.
The experienced coach also highlighted the difference between playing in front of an enthusiastic crowd and competing in a stadium without supporters.
For Banyana, the occasion provided an opportunity to reconnect with fans in the Free State while delivering a performance that rewarded their presence.
South Africa had already taken a commanding step towards qualification with a 4-0 victory in the first leg, thanks to goals from Ronnel Donnelly, who scored a hat-trick, and Hildah Magaia.
However, Ellis ensured her players approached the return fixture professionally, despite their substantial advantage.
The hosts initially struggled to find their rhythm, but they improved after the break. Gabriela Moodaly-Salgado opened the scoring shortly after half-time before Donnelly came off the bench to score twice, completing another impressive display.
The result also underlined South Africa's attacking strength and defensive discipline, as they scored seven goals across the two matches without conceding.
Despite the comfortable victory, Ellis acknowledged that her team could have been more clinical in front of goal. She believed the players created enough opportunities to increase their scoring tally, but needed greater patience in the final third.
The coach also made six changes to her starting line-up, using the encounter to assess different combinations and provide valuable opportunities to other players.
Progression to the next round represents an important step in Banyana's ambition to return to the Olympic Games. South Africa will face Angola in the third round, scheduled for February or March 2027.
With only two African nations expected to qualify for the 2028 Olympic football tournament in Los Angeles, the road ahead remains challenging.
For Ellis and her players, the victories over Madagascar provide confidence, but the coach knows further improvement will be required against stronger opposition.
The support in Bloemfontein, meanwhile, offered a reminder of the growing enthusiasm surrounding women's football in South Africa and the importance of supporters in inspiring the national team.
Banyana will now look to build on their successful Olympic qualifying start as they continue pursuing their international ambitions.
