Wiliete SC Eliminate Mamelodi Sundowns on Away Goals — Defending Champions

Mamelodi Sundowns Crash Out of CAF Champions League as Wiliete SC Deliver Stunning Blow to Defending Champions

Mamelodi Sundowns have suffered a devastating setback in their continental campaign after being eliminated from the 2026/27 CAF Champions League by Angolan side Wiliete SC on the away-goals rule.

The defending African champions were held to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday night, 23 October 2026, with the result proving sufficient for Wiliete to secure qualification for the group stages following a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola.

The outcome represents one of the biggest surprises of the preliminary rounds, as Sundowns entered the competition determined to defend the continental title they won last season. Instead, the Pretoria-based club will be forced to reassess their ambitions after an unexpectedly early exit.

Sundowns began the decisive encounter knowing that victory would guarantee their passage into the group stages. Playing in front of their home supporters, Miguel Cardoso’s men made an encouraging start and found the breakthrough after just 10 minutes.

Tashreeq Matthews fired home to put the Brazilians ahead, lifting the atmosphere at Loftus Versfeld and giving the home side an early advantage in the tie.

With the opening goal secured, Sundowns appeared to be in a strong position to take control of the contest. Brayan León subsequently had two significant opportunities to extend the lead before half-time, but the striker was unable to convert either chance.

Those missed opportunities would prove costly as the match unfolded. Against an opponent fighting for a historic qualification, Sundowns needed to be more clinical in front of goal.

Wiliete SC came out for the second half with renewed determination and quickly capitalised on a major defensive error from the hosts.

A poor back pass from Cassius Mailula created confusion in the Sundowns defence, allowing Angolan striker Mabululu to race through on goal. With Marcelo Allende unable to recover in time, Mabululu found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and calmly finished to make it 1-1.

The equaliser dramatically changed the situation. Having failed to score in the first leg, Wiliete now had the crucial away goal they needed to put the defending champions under enormous pressure.

Despite the significance of the moment, Sundowns could not find another goal to restore their advantage. Wiliete held firm and protected the result until the final whistle, completing a remarkable elimination of the South African giants.

The elimination is a significant disappointment for Cardoso and his players, who had hoped to build on their previous continental success.

Sundowns have established themselves as one of Africa’s leading clubs in recent years, regularly reaching the latter stages of the CAF Champions League. Their failure to qualify for the 2026/27 group stages is therefore a major departure from the standards the club has set.

The result also raises questions about their finishing and defensive concentration. León’s missed chances and the mistake that led to Mabululu’s equaliser proved decisive in a tie where the smallest details carried enormous consequences.

For Wiliete SC, meanwhile, the achievement will be celebrated as a major milestone. The Angolan outfit showed resilience, discipline and composure to withstand Sundowns’ challenge and take advantage of the opportunity that came their way.

Sundowns must now turn their attention to their domestic commitments and the other competitions in which they remain involved. The club will need to respond positively, with supporters expecting the players and technical team to learn from the disappointment.

For now, however, the immediate story belongs to Wiliete SC, who have stunned the defending champions and secured their place in the CAF Champions League group stages.
