Young Star Snubbed Big Sundowns Money – And It Made Him a Superstar

South African football star Relebohile Mofokeng once turned down a significantly higher salary from Mamelodi Sundowns to join Orlando Pirates, a decision that ultimately played an important role in his rise to prominence. His father, Sechaba Mofokeng, has now revealed how the talented attacker chose long-term development over immediate financial rewards.

According to his father, Sundowns offered the young footballer R15,000 per month to join their Under-19 team, with the possibility of progressing to the reserve side in the DStv Diski Challenge if he impressed. Orlando Pirates, meanwhile, offered him a place in their DDC team but could only provide a monthly salary of R6,000.

Despite the substantial financial difference, Mofokeng was convinced that Pirates offered him a better opportunity to fulfil his ambitions.

Sechaba recalled explaining the two offers to his son and allowing him to make the final decision. After taking a bath, the youngster returned with a clear answer: he wanted to join Orlando Pirates.

His father questioned the decision because of the difference in salary, but Mofokeng remained determined. The youngster had observed how several Pirates players progressed from the DDC team into the senior squad, and he believed the club offered a clearer pathway to professional football.

That confidence eventually paid off. Mofokeng impressed in the development ranks before breaking into Pirates' first team, where his creativity, pace and attacking ability quickly attracted attention. His performances also earned him opportunities to represent Bafana Bafana.

His progress subsequently opened the door to European football, with Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise becoming the next chapter in his career.

The story has highlighted the importance of choosing the right development environment rather than focusing exclusively on financial rewards. For aspiring footballers, Mofokeng's journey demonstrates how patience, ambition and careful decision-making can shape a promising career.

His decision to choose Pirates over Sundowns remains a powerful example of prioritising opportunity over money, with the young star continuing to build his reputation on the international stage.
