Naturana Rejected Him: Former Chiefs Defender Breaks Silence After Scoring Historic League Goal

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has sent a strong message about handling pressure in the UEFA Champions League after facing German giants Borussia Dortmund, insisting that the competition’s atmosphere does not intimidate him.

The 22-year-old South African centre-back is enjoying an encouraging start to his career at Azerbaijani club Sabah FK after leaving Kaizer Chiefs ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. McCarthy has quickly begun making his presence felt, earning valuable opportunities to test himself against some of Europe’s most established teams.

His confidence was evident during Sabah’s Champions League encounter against Dortmund at the Baku Olympic Stadium on Tuesday evening. Despite the pressure of facing an experienced European opponent, the young defender produced a promising individual performance and scored his first Champions League goal.

Although Sabah ultimately suffered a 2-1 defeat, with Serhou Guirassy scoring twice for Dortmund, McCarthy’s contribution provided a positive moment for the Azerbaijani side and South African football supporters following his progress abroad.

Speaking about the atmosphere surrounding the prestigious competition, McCarthy explained that playing in front of large crowds was not an entirely new experience for him. The defender pointed to his previous exposure to stadiums capable of accommodating approximately 100,000 spectators as a reason he was comfortable handling the occasion.

His comments reflect the confidence he has carried into European football, where concentration, composure and mental strength are essential when competing against elite opposition.

McCarthy’s development will be closely watched in South Africa, particularly by supporters who remember his time at Kaizer Chiefs. His move to Sabah has provided him with an opportunity to gain international experience and demonstrate his abilities on a bigger stage.

His performances could also strengthen his case for future consideration by Bafana Bafana selectors as South Africa continues to assess its defensive options. However, consistent performances at club level will remain crucial if he hopes to establish himself in the national team.

For now, McCarthy will be focused on helping Sabah recover from their defeat and building on his impressive Champions League experience.

His goal against Dortmund represents an important milestone in his career, while his confident response to the pressure highlights his determination to succeed in European football.
