Pirates, Galaxy and Gallants Coaches Highlight Areas for Improvement

Three Betway Premiership coaches have challenged their players to improve following Tuesday night's Carling Knockout Cup matches, with Orlando Pirates, TS Galaxy and Marumo Gallants experiencing different outcomes.

Despite the contrasting results, the reactions from the technical teams highlighted a common message: players must maintain high standards and address their weaknesses if their clubs are to achieve their objectives this season.

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou expressed concerns about his team's performance despite the Buccaneers recording a convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC to advance to the next round of the Carling Knockout Cup.

Although Pirates secured the result they wanted, Ouaddou was reportedly unhappy with the team's decision-making in attacking positions and its failure to convert more of the opportunities created.

The Buccaneers managed to score three goals but missed other chances, raising concerns about their finishing and composure in the final third. The coach also reportedly took issue with selfish play, emphasising the importance of players recognising when passing to a teammate offers a better opportunity to score.

With Pirates competing for honours on multiple fronts, Ouaddou will want his players to become more clinical and consistent. His concerns come at a crucial time, with the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs scheduled for Saturday. The Buccaneers will need to make the most of their chances when they face their biggest rivals.

Meanwhile, TS Galaxy suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, bringing their Carling Knockout Cup campaign to an end.

Interim coach Esau Mtsweni saw his team keep Chiefs at bay during the first half before Wandile Duba took control after the break, scoring a hat-trick to secure victory for Amakhosi.

Galaxy struggled to contain their opponents in the second half, leaving Mtsweni with several issues to address as the team looks to recover and return to winning ways in the league.

Marumo Gallants also exited the competition after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld. Siyanda Ndlovu scored the decisive goal in the first half, giving the Brazilians the advantage in a closely contested encounter.

Gallants were unable to find an equaliser, meaning their attention must now turn to their upcoming league fixtures. The coaching staff will need to assess the team's performance and identify areas that require improvement.

For Sundowns, the victory provided some encouragement following their elimination from the CAF Champions League. However, the narrow margin of victory also showed that the team still has work to do as it continues its domestic campaign.

Tuesday night's matches demonstrated that advancing in a competition or securing a victory does not necessarily mean a team has performed to its full potential. Coaches continue to demand better decision-making, improved finishing and consistency from their players.

As the season progresses, Pirates, TS Galaxy and Marumo Gallants will all need to respond to their respective challenges if they hope to achieve their goals in South African football.
