PSG Coach Luis Enrique Reveals ‘Simple’ Plan to Stop Lamine Yamal Ahead of Barcelona Clash
Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has revealed his strategy for limiting the threat of Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal ahead of Tuesday night's UEFA Champions League showdown in Paris.
The Spanish tactician believes the most effective way to stop the teenage winger is by controlling possession and preventing Barcelona from supplying him with the ball.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated encounter on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, Enrique explained that PSG must focus on keeping the ball away from Barcelona if they hope to reduce Yamal's influence on the match.
The PSG manager believes the solution is straightforward, although he acknowledges that executing the plan against a technically gifted Barcelona side will be difficult.
The clash promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the Champions League league phase, with both European heavyweights possessing the attacking quality to trouble even the strongest defences.
Yamal has established himself as one of Barcelona's most exciting young players, earning widespread recognition for his dribbling ability, creativity and confidence in one-on-one situations. His capacity to create scoring opportunities makes him a major concern for opposing defenders.
However, Enrique has made it clear that PSG cannot afford to concentrate exclusively on the 18-year-old, as Barcelona have several other players capable of deciding important matches.
The PSG coach recognises the quality within Barcelona's squad, including players such as Raphinha, Pedri, Pau Cubarsí and goalkeeper Joan García. Their presence means the French champions must prepare for a collective challenge rather than focus on one individual.
Enrique's comments suggest that PSG will need a disciplined team performance, with effective pressing, intelligent positioning and careful ball retention likely to play important roles in their approach.
The PSG manager also has a personal connection to Barcelona, having previously played for and coached the Catalan club. Nevertheless, his priority is now to guide the Parisian side to victory in a crucial European fixture.
Enrique has also cautioned against comparing Yamal with Lionel Messi, arguing that the young winger should be allowed to develop his own identity rather than constantly being measured against one of football's greatest players.
For PSG, the challenge will be translating Enrique's tactical idea into an effective performance against opponents who are equally comfortable dominating possession.
If the Parisians can control the midfield, disrupt Barcelona's passing rhythm and limit the service reaching Yamal, they could significantly reduce the teenager's opportunities to make a decisive impact.
However, Barcelona's technical quality means PSG cannot expect to dominate possession throughout the entire contest. The home side will therefore need to remain organised whenever possession changes hands.
With two ambitious teams preparing for a major European showdown, all eyes will be on whether Enrique's plan can deliver the desired result or whether Yamal will once again find a way to shine on the biggest stage.
