Kaizer Chiefs fans have reason to smile. Defender Rushwin Dortley has been named in the travelling squad for this weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup clash against Red Arrows in Zambia. This could mark his first competitive appearance since 1 March 2025.
The 24-year-old left-sided centre-back has been out for a very long time. He has missed 64 matches for Amakhosi. That long absence came after a serious knee injury that needed two operations and several hospital visits. For nearly 20 months the young defender watched from the sidelines while the team played on.
Dortley last featured when Nasreddine Nabi was still the coach. Since then he has lost out on club games and also on chances with Bafana Bafana. Other left-footed central defenders have stepped up for the national team during his time away.
Chiefs have been careful with his recovery. Even though he has been training fully for some weeks now, the club has taken no chances. Including him in the squad that flies to Ndola is a big step forward. It shows he is once again available for selection.
The first leg against Red Arrows takes place at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. Kick-off is on Saturday afternoon local time. Dortley may or may not play, but just being part of the group is good news for everyone at Naturena.
His return gives the defence another option. He can compete for a place alongside players like Bradley Cross. Coach Fernando Da Cruz now has more choices as Amakhosi begin their Confederation Cup campaign for a second season in a row.
Supporters will watch closely to see if the number 24 jersey appears on the field soon. After such a long and difficult road back, any minutes Dortley gets will be welcomed. The young defender has worked hard to reach this point.
For Kaizer Chiefs, having him back in the fold strengthens the squad at an important time. The focus remains on getting through the qualifying ties and building momentum. Dortley’s possible return after 64 matches is a positive story in the middle of a busy period for the Glamour Boys.
