Former Young Africans coach Luc Eymael has reportedly shared his thoughts on the club’s decision to dismiss Manqoba Mngqithi, including what he told the Tanzanian side’s vice-chairman after the South African manager was relieved of his duties.
Eymael, who previously worked with Young Africans, is believed to have questioned the decision in view of the progress Mngqithi made during his brief spell in charge. His experience at the club gives him an understanding of the pressure managers face while leading one of Tanzania’s most successful football teams.
Mngqithi arrived at Young Africans in July 2026 after leaving South African football. He brought valuable experience gained from his previous roles at Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows. His appointment generated expectations that he would maintain the club’s dominance in domestic competitions while improving its performances in continental football.
During his time in Tanzania, Mngqithi delivered encouraging results. He guided Young Africans to victory over their traditional rivals, Simba SC, in the Tanzanian Community Shield. He also helped the club secure qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage, giving supporters reasons to remain optimistic about the team’s progress.
However, the situation changed after Young Africans suffered a 2-1 defeat against Simba in the Kariakoo Derby on October 10. Pressure mounted further when the team played out a goalless draw against TRA United on October 24. The result left Young Africans five points behind their rivals in the league standings, increasing concerns about their domestic campaign.
The club subsequently announced the termination of Mngqithi’s contract, bringing his time in charge to an unexpectedly early conclusion.
Despite the disappointing results in the league, his overall record tells a different story. Young Africans played 13 matches under his leadership, winning 10, drawing two and losing just once. These statistics highlight the contrast between his impressive overall results and the setbacks that preceded his dismissal.
Eymael’s reported discussion with the club’s vice-chairman has attracted attention because it raises questions about the reasoning behind the decision. His perspective could contribute to the wider debate surrounding managerial expectations and the patience given to coaches at major clubs.
Young Africans have experienced managerial changes in recent seasons, raising concerns about continuity and long-term planning. Frequent dismissals can disrupt tactical development and make it difficult for managers to establish consistent playing systems.
Mngqithi must now consider his next career move, while Young Africans face the challenge of finding a replacement capable of improving their league position and guiding the team through the CAF Champions League campaign.
