South African coach Rulani Mokwena continued to impress in Egypt after guiding Pyramids FC to a convincing 4-1 victory over El-Gaish in the Egyptian Premier League.
The victory extended Pyramids’ winning streak to 11 matches across all competitions, while marking their seventh consecutive league triumph. The Egyptian side returned to domestic action after defeating South Sudanese outfit El Merriekh away from home in the CAF Champions League.
Mokwena’s men made a flying start, opening the scoring in the sixth minute through midfielder Mohanad Lasheen. The goal was his second of the season, taking his total goal contributions to four.
Pyramids doubled their lead in the 15th minute when Mostafa Ziko found the back of the net, putting the hosts in a comfortable position. However, El-Gaish fought back and pulled one goal back in the 35th minute through Ahmed Tarek, reducing the score to 2-1.
The home side continued pushing for another goal after the break, with Youssef Obama appearing to extend their advantage. However, his effort was disallowed following a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
Pyramids eventually restored their two-goal cushion with 10 minutes remaining in normal time when Mahmoud Saber scored his second goal in just four days. Mahmoud Zalaka then converted a penalty in the 89th minute to seal an emphatic 4-1 victory.
The result keeps Pyramids at the top of the Egyptian Premier League standings, five points ahead of second-placed Al Ahly, who have a game in hand.
Mokwena will now shift his attention to Saturday evening’s CAF Champions League preliminary-round second leg against El Merriekh as he looks to maintain his side’s impressive momentum.
### Valencia CF Reportedly Interested in Rulani Mokwena
Meanwhile, Mokwena has reportedly attracted interest from Spanish La Liga club Valencia CF, with reports suggesting that the club is considering offering the South African tactician an assistant coaching position.
According to unconfirmed reports, the proposed opportunity could come with a monthly salary of R7 million. It has also been claimed that Mokwena has reached an agreement on personal terms with the Spanish side, while discussions over the remaining paperwork are reportedly ongoing.
If the reported financial package is accurate and the move materialises, it could make Mokwena one of the highest-paid South African coaches.
However, neither Valencia CF nor Mokwena has officially confirmed the reported offer, salary figures or claims of an agreement. The details should therefore be treated as speculation until an official announcement is made.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach joined Pyramids FC after his departure from the South African club and has continued to build his reputation with his recent run of victories in Egypt.
For now, Mokwena remains in charge of Pyramids FC, where his immediate priority is to maintain the team's winning form, protect their position at the top of the league and progress further in the CAF Champions League.
Whether the reported Valencia interest develops into a concrete offer remains to be seen, but Mokwena’s impressive results in Egypt have certainly put the spotlight on his coaching career.
