Former Mamelodi Sundowns Coach Sacked Overseas Despite Winning 10 Out Of 13 Games

Mofokeng Makes Mzansi Proud in Europe as Mngqithi Faces Shock Exit and Mokwena Continues Winning Run

South African football experienced a weekend of contrasting fortunes abroad, with Relebohile Mofokeng stealing the spotlight in Belgium while experienced coach Manqoba Mngqithi suffered a disappointing exit from Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC.

Mofokeng continued to strengthen his reputation in European football with another impressive performance for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, demonstrating why he is regarded as one of South Africa's most exciting young talents.

The former Orlando Pirates star played a crucial role as Union Saint-Gilloise produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Cercle Brugge 5-2 in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday.

Union initially found themselves two goals behind, but the Belgian outfit showed tremendous character to turn the match around. Mofokeng scored in the 80th minute before providing an assist for the fifth goal in the closing stages.

His contribution highlighted his growing influence at the club, where he has been adapting impressively since making the move from South Africa.

The talented attacker has now registered five goals and three assists in 14 appearances across all competitions this season, underlining his importance to the Belgian champions.

Union's victory also strengthened their position in the league standings, with the club continuing to compete near the top of the table.

Meanwhile, fellow South African internationals Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Lyle Foster faced each other in Major League Soccer action in the United States. Their respective teams, Minnesota United and Houston Dynamo, played out a goalless draw, with Hlongwane completing the match while Foster was substituted in the second half.

However, the weekend brought disappointing news for South African coaching representation abroad.

Mngqithi was dismissed by Young Africans following a 0-0 draw against TRA United, a result that left the Tanzanian giants trailing league leaders Simba SC by five points.

The decision came despite Mngqithi guiding the club into the CAF Champions League group stages and winning the Tanzanian Community Shield during his brief tenure.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician reportedly oversaw 13 matches, recording 10 victories, two draws and one defeat. Nevertheless, the recent derby loss to Simba and the subsequent league stalemate proved costly.

In contrast, Rulani Mokwena continued his impressive start at Egyptian side Pyramids FC, guiding the club into the CAF Champions League group stages after a commanding 5-0 aggregate victory over El Merriekh Bentiu.

The weekend's developments demonstrate the unpredictable nature of football abroad. While Mofokeng continues to raise South Africa's profile in Europe and Mokwena builds momentum in Egypt, Mngqithi's departure serves as a reminder that success does not always guarantee job security.

For South African football supporters, Mofokeng's growing influence remains a major source of excitement as the young star continues his development on the European stage.
