“One Failure Shouldn’t Define Cardoso” Luis Goncalves Defends Sundowns Coach After Shock Cup Exit

Sundowns Bombshell: Luis Goncalves Defends Miguel Cardoso After Shock Champions League Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has received public backing from fellow Portuguese coach Luis Goncalves following the Brazilians’ disappointing elimination from the CAF Champions League, with the former coach insisting that one setback should not erase the achievements made under Cardoso’s leadership.

Sundowns suffered a major blow when Angolan side Wiliete SC eliminated the defending champions in the second preliminary round. After a goalless first-leg draw, the return fixture at Loftus Versfeld ended 1-1, allowing Wiliete to progress on the away-goals rule.

The result brought an unexpected end to Sundowns’ hopes of defending their continental crown and intensified questions about Cardoso’s future. The Tshwane giants had become accustomed to reaching the group stages, making the early elimination particularly painful for the club and its supporters.

However, Goncalves believes the coach deserves to be judged on his overall contribution rather than one disappointing result.

Goncalves Sends A Strong Message

Goncalves acknowledged that Sundowns’ financial investment and high ambitions naturally create pressure to deliver results in Africa. Nevertheless, he argued that Cardoso’s previous accomplishments should carry considerable weight when the club evaluates its position.

“One failure shouldn’t define Cardoso,” Goncalves said, pointing to the coach’s achievements, including Sundowns’ Champions League triumph and their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.

He also highlighted the team’s progress under Cardoso, arguing that the Portuguese tactician has helped the Brazilians compete at the highest level.

The message comes at a time when Sundowns are facing scrutiny from supporters who expected another deep run in the Champions League. For many fans, qualifying for the group stages is a minimum requirement for a club of Sundowns’ stature.

Goncalves, however, believes that the team’s wider achievements should not be overlooked simply because of one costly setback.

Despite the continental disappointment, Sundowns have enjoyed success in other competitions. They have won the MTN8 and the FIFA African-Asian Pacific Cup this season and remain in contention for further silverware.

Those achievements strengthen Goncalves’ argument that Cardoso has continued to make a contribution, even though the Champions League exit represents a serious failure to meet the club’s ambitions.

Cardoso himself has acknowledged the disappointment, accepting collective responsibility for the elimination. He admitted that Sundowns created opportunities but failed to convert enough chances to secure qualification.

The coach has also urged his players to respond positively by concentrating on the competitions that remain, rather than allowing the defeat to derail their season.

Goncalves believes Cardoso should remain in charge, arguing that his record deserves consideration despite the pressure surrounding the early exit.

His support does not, however, amount to an official confirmation from Sundowns management about the coach’s future. The club has not announced a change in leadership.
