Steve Komphela Reportedly Takes Charge of Sundowns Training as Miguel Cardoso Faces Uncertainty

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly taken charge of the team’s training session at the club’s Kloorkop training base amid growing uncertainty surrounding head coach Miguel Cardoso following the Brazilians’ disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League.

According to unconfirmed reports, Komphela oversaw preparations as Sundowns turned their attention to their upcoming Carling Knockout Cup clash against Marumo Gallants. His reported involvement has sparked speculation among supporters about Cardoso’s position and the possibility of changes within the club’s technical team.

Reports have also suggested that Sundowns management held an emergency meeting with Cardoso to discuss the team’s recent performances and determine the way forward after their early elimination from Africa’s premier club competition.

However, the club has not officially confirmed that Cardoso has been suspended, dismissed or relieved of his responsibilities. The circumstances surrounding his reported absence from training also remain unclear.

The situation comes at a crucial moment for the Tshwane giants, who are under pressure to respond positively after falling short of expectations on the continental stage. Sundowns have established themselves as one of South Africa’s leading clubs, regularly competing for domestic trophies while pursuing success in African competitions.

Their Champions League disappointment has consequently raised questions about the team’s performances, tactical approach and ambitions for the remainder of the season.

Komphela’s extensive experience in South African football could prove valuable as Sundowns prepare for their next assignment. Nevertheless, his reported role in training does not necessarily indicate that a permanent coaching change is imminent.

The Carling Knockout Cup encounter against Marumo Gallants now presents Sundowns with an opportunity to redirect their attention towards domestic silverware and restore confidence among their supporters.

For now, fans will be awaiting an official statement from the club regarding Cardoso’s situation and the technical team’s plans. Until confirmation emerges, reports of a potential coaching shake-up should be treated as speculation rather than an established decision.
