Rulani Mokwena has led Pyramids FC into the group stages of the CAF Champions League, and he did it with a win that left no doubt. Pyramids beat South Sudanese side El Merriekh Bentiu 4-0 at home in Cairo on Saturday, which gave them a 5-0 victory over the two legs.
The tie was already in Pyramids' favour after the first leg in South Sudan, which they won 1-0. In the return match, they took control early. Abdelrahman Magdi scored in the 23rd minute and added a second just five minutes later. Mostafa Fathi made it 3-0 in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Nadhir Benbouali got the fourth goal in the 71st minute and sealed the result.
The win was also Mokwena's 12th in a row since he took charge of the Egyptian club. For a coach who only recently arrived, that is a strong start, and it shows how quickly the team has settled under him.
Mokwena is well known in South Africa because of his earlier work at Mamelodi Sundowns. His results in Egypt are being followed closely by South African fans, especially because the pressure at a big Egyptian club is very high and the demands for success are constant.
Pyramids won the CAF Champions League in the 2024/25 season, so reaching the group stage is what many would expect of them. Still, the next phase will be harder. The opponents will be stronger, and the team will need to play well over several weeks, not just in one or two matches.
Mokwena will have to keep his side winning while also handling both domestic and continental competitions. For now, though, the club has good reason to be pleased. The result secured their place in the group stage, extended the winning run and added to the coach's growing name in African football.
South African supporters will be watching to see how far he can take Pyramids this time.
