Mike Makaab, the CEO of ProSport International, has commented on the unexpected departure of Manqoba Mngqithi from Young Africans and the rumors linking him to Kaizer Chiefs.
Mngqithi was dismissed after Young Africans drew 0-0 with TRA United in the Tanzanian Premier League, a result that hindered their title chase and left them trailing arch-rivals Simba SC by five points. His exit was surprising given his strong start, where Yanga won five consecutive matches, he was awarded Coach of the Month, and he led the team into the CAF Champions League group stage.
However, after a 2-1 loss to Simba SC, pressure mounted, and the draw with TRA United became his final game. In an interview with KickOff, Makaab admitted he was taken aback by the decision, though he acknowledged that football can be unpredictable and that he has learned to expect the unexpected in his long career.
Additionally, Mngqithi has been speculated as a potential candidate for Kaizer Chiefs, who are facing criticism following their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup. Chiefs' head coach, Fernando Da Cruz, is under intense scrutiny due to the team's disappointing performance, leading to speculation about changes in the coaching staff.
When asked if Mngqithi could be a fit for the Chiefs, Makaab refrained from making any commitments, noting his extensive experience in football means he is rarely surprised. Given Mngqithi's previous success at Sundowns, he may attract interest as clubs evaluate their coaching options. Furthermore, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is also experiencing pressure after failing to qualify for the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time since 2015.
In their latest match, the Chiefs convincingly defeated TS Galaxy 3-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16, with Wandile Duba scoring all three goals.
