In Saturday's 2-1 Syrian Premier League win against Qamishli SC, former Kaizer Chiefs forward Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana scored his first goal for Al-Karamah SC.
The Burundi international, who is 28 years old, was without a club for a while until signing a free transfer with Al-Karamah. Since his departure from Jeddah SC in July 2026, a club in the Saudi First Division League, he has not played for any of them.
In the 23rd minute of the match at Deir ez-Zor Municipal Stadium, Bimenyimana scored his first goal in his new environment. The towering and physically intimidating attacker put the away team ahead and helped them take a lead into halftime.
After the break, Qamishli came out strong and, in the 65th minute, Mohammed Issa Hamo scored to tie the game. The home team gained some momentum and a chance at a victory after the goal put them back in the game.
But in the end, it was Al-Karamah who came out on top, capturing all three points. The 2-1 victory for the visitors was sealed in the 86th minute by Mohammad Al Marmour, who scored to restore their lead.
With seven points after three games, Al-Karamah jumped to the top of the Syrian Premier League rankings, therefore this success was crucial for them. Their campaign has gotten off to a good start with two wins and a tie.
Now that he has scored his first goal, Bimenyimana will try to cement his place in the Syrian club's starting lineup. The forward, who has spent the last many years bouncing around different leagues, will be looking for stability and a chance to make a big splash in his most recent chapter.
Bimenyimana has played in a number of countries after his 2023 stint with Kaizer Chiefs ended in South Africa. These include Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Rwanda, Burundi, Slovakia, and Latvia. His career in football has led him to many other countries, and his transfer to Syria is only the latest stop.
A major milestone in South African football was also reached by the Burundi striker when he was at Chiefs. When Amakhosi beat Stellenbosch FC 3-1 in 2022, he scored a hat trick of penalties, which is still the record in the PSL.
As he tries to get back on track and give Al-Karamah a shot at becoming a top club in the league, the former Chiefs striker may take heart from his most recent goal in Syria.
