McCarthy Admits He Never Expected to Score Against Dortmund

South African defender Aden McCarthy has expressed his joy after scoring his first goal for Sabah FK during their UEFA Champions League match against the renowned German team, Borussia Dortmund.

At just 22 years old, McCarthy netted a goal in Sabah's 2-1 loss to Dortmund, marking a significant personal achievement following his off-season move from Kaizer Chiefs.

Since joining the Malaysian club, McCarthy has been adapting to a new football environment while honing his skills. Scoring against a prestigious European team has become a memorable highlight in his career, even though his team did not secure a favorable outcome.

After the match, the young defender commented on the unpredictable nature of football, highlighting that any team can create remarkable moments, regardless of their opponents' strength or reputation. He emphasized the importance of players believing in their abilities and positioning themselves effectively to seize scoring chances when they arise.

"It just shows anything is possible, no matter who you come against; the ball is round, anything can happen, so as long as you put yourself in those positions to score, it can occur," McCarthy told ANews.

The former Kaizer Chiefs player also noted that he hadn’t anticipated scoring against such a formidable opponent, describing the goal as an unexpected event in the match rather than something he had prepared for.

"I showed it tonight; I never expected to score. You don't plan for these moments, but it just happened, and I'm very happy," he remarked.

The goal signifies a promising moment for McCarthy as he continues his career beyond South Africa. Competing against seasoned players from well-known European clubs allows the defender to enhance his skills, build confidence, and gain valuable international experience.

Despite Sabah's 2-1 defeat, McCarthy's goal provided a bright spot for the team, illustrating that they could challenge a respected opponent, even in losing circumstances.

For the young South African, this accomplishment could serve as added motivation as he aims to establish himself at Sabah FK and advance in his professional journey. Although the team's loss may be disappointing, McCarthy can take pride in achieving this personal milestone against one of Germany’s most recognizable football clubs.
