Orlando Pirates youngster Simphiwe Masilela has been urged to remain grounded as he begins to establish himself around the club’s senior team.

The 22-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a steady rise through the Pirates development system, progressing from the DStv Diski Challenge setup to the first-team environment. His promotion represents an important milestone in his young career, but former coach Joseph Makhanya believes the real challenge is only beginning.

Makhanya, who previously worked with Masilela during his development years, has encouraged the youngster to maintain his focus and continue working hard despite the increased attention that comes with being part of a major club.

For a young player, breaking into the senior squad can bring considerable excitement and pressure. However, Makhanya’s message is that earning a place in the first team is only one part of the journey. Masilela must now demonstrate that he can consistently perform at the highest level and compete with more experienced players for regular opportunities.

The advice comes at a significant stage of Masilela’s development. Having already shown enough potential to attract the attention of the senior setup, expectations are likely to increase as supporters look for signs that he can become an important player for the Buccaneers.

Masilela will therefore need to approach his opportunity with discipline, humility and determination. Rather than becoming distracted by the recognition surrounding his promotion, the midfielder will be expected to concentrate on improving his game and making the most of every opportunity given to him.

For Orlando Pirates supporters, Masilela’s emergence offers another reason for optimism about the club’s ability to develop young talent. His progress will now be closely monitored as he attempts to turn his breakthrough into a sustained first-team career.

The talent and opportunity appear to be in place, but consistency will ultimately determine how far Masilela can go. If he can remain focused and continue developing, he could become an important figure for Pirates in the years ahead.
