Bafana Bafana midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng has explained the mentality behind his impressive headed goal for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise after helping the Belgian club secure a remarkable 5-2 comeback victory over Cercle Brugge.
The South African international played the full 90 minutes on Sunday, October 25, as Union Saint-Gilloise recovered from a two-goal deficit to claim all three points in the Belgian Pro League encounter.
Cercle Brugge initially put the hosts under pressure, but Union fought back to turn the match around. Mofokeng played a crucial role in the comeback, scoring his side’s fourth goal in the 80th minute with a superb header inside the penalty area.
The goal attracted attention because Mofokeng is not among the tallest players on the pitch. However, the former Orlando Pirates star demonstrated excellent positioning, determination and timing to connect with the cross and send the ball into the net.
Speaking after the match, Mofokeng explained the mindset that helped him score despite the physical challenge of competing against taller defenders.
“It’s just on your mind, if the desire is there and the mentality is there, you’ll always get the goal,” he said, according to the Pro League.
He also stressed that he still wanted to contribute more to his team, particularly when competing for aerial balls.
“I think I gave my best, but I just have to do more for my team because when the ball is high, I just have to compete for it.”
Mofokeng did not stop at scoring. He also provided an assist for Union Saint-Gilloise’s fifth goal late in the match, completing an influential performance in the club’s comeback victory.
The club also attracted attention with its reaction to his goal celebration, comparing the moment to Simba, the popular character from the animated film The Lion King.
The performance further underlined Mofokeng’s growing importance since moving to Belgian football. His ability to score, create chances and contribute to the team’s attacking play has continued to attract attention from supporters.
Union Saint-Gilloise will now look to build on the victory as the Belgian campaign continues, while Mofokeng will aim to maintain his form and strengthen his position in the team.
Mofokeng’s latest display also sends a clear message about his approach to football: determination and the willingness to compete can make a difference, regardless of a player's physical stature.
