Dillon Sheppard, an assistant coach for the Kaizer Chiefs, has voiced his displeasure with the team's draw-to-win ratio, saying that the Amakhosi will be meaningless in the Betway Premiership regardless of their record.
The Soweto giants continued their perfect 2025/26 league campaign on Tuesday nite at FNB Stadium with a 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC. Their consistency and title aspirations were called into question, though, as this result was their fifth draw in eight league matches.
Sinoxolo Kwayiba scored for Stellenbosch just after halftime, and Chiefs gave up the lead. Even though Amakhosi had several good scoring chances, they were unable to capitalize on them. Mduduzi Shabalala leveled the score in the 58th minute.
Sheppard acknowledged that the team's failure to capitalize on opportunities is still a big worry, especially when players get into dangerous positions in the attacking third.
The Chiefs had trouble finding the sweet spot between pressing forward and protecting their backline, according to the assistant coach, who also pointed out the team's defensive shortcomings.
Sheppard claims that the wing-backs and midfielders' tactical adjustments did not result in the expected offensive effect. Both finishing and defensive organization need to be addressed, he emphasized, and that is the responsibility of the technical team.
Even though the Chiefs haven't lost yet, they haven't been able to gain any traction in the league thanks to their string of tiebreakers.
Their focus will now be on Saturday, October 17th, when they face the Red Arrows of Zambia in the CAF Confederation Cup. Amakhosi have a chance to respond positively and fix the problems their coaches have found in this match.
If the Chiefs can tighten their defense, finish better, and start turning promising performances into wins, the fan base will be very pleased.
