Moroka Swallows’ return to competitive football has sparked fresh hope among supporters eager to see the historic Soweto club reclaim its former glory. Former sports broadcaster Walter Mokoena is leading a new initiative to rebuild the famous Dube Birds and restore their position in South African football.
Now operating as Moroka Swallows Sports Club, the revived team has entered the SAFA Johannesburg Regional League, marking the beginning of a challenging journey towards professional football.
Swallows boast a proud history, having won several major domestic trophies, including the Nedbank Cup and MTN8. Over the years, the club established itself as one of South Africa’s respected football institutions, attracting a loyal fan base.
However, financial challenges and administrative instability affected the club’s progress in recent years. In 2024, its top-flight status was sold to Marumo Gallants, forcing the historic side to begin rebuilding its football operations from the lower divisions.
Mokoena has outlined plans to develop a broader sporting organisation, with football, netball and basketball forming part of the project. Discussions are also reportedly underway with the City of Johannesburg regarding suitable sporting facilities, particularly in Soweto.
The road back to the Premier Soccer League will not be easy. Swallows must secure promotions through the football divisions while establishing financial stability and effective management.
Their first reported match in the regional league ended in a narrow 3-2 defeat against Clever Boys, highlighting the challenges facing the rebuilding project.
Despite the disappointing start, supporters remain hopeful that the Dube Birds can eventually return to the professional ranks. For now, the club must concentrate on rebuilding its foundations and achieving consistent results on the pitch.
A PSL comeback remains a long-term ambition, with the success of the revival depending on patience, planning and sustained progress.
