Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly explained his side of the heated confrontation with Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi in Angola, with sports broadcaster Robert Marawa claiming that the South African tactician felt he had been subjected to disrespect and racism.
The alleged incident took place following Sunday's match between Sundowns and the Angolan club. Reports later emerged that Bianchi had been taken to hospital for medical attention, although the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear.
Speaking on his radio programme on Monday, Marawa shared details of Komphela's version of events after reportedly speaking directly to the Sundowns assistant coach.
According to the broadcaster, Komphela indicated that disrespect and racism were among the behaviours he found particularly difficult to tolerate. He allegedly believed that comments directed at him in Portuguese during the exchange crossed the line.
Marawa declined to repeat the alleged remarks during his broadcast, describing them as inappropriate for radio.
The broadcaster also provided an account of the events that reportedly led to the confrontation. According to his explanation, Komphela had left the match area to observe players warming up when he encountered Bianchi, who was allegedly waiting for him.
Tensions reportedly escalated as the two coaches approached the tunnel. Marawa also suggested that an earlier disagreement may have taken place during half-time, although further details about that alleged exchange remain unclear.
Komphela reportedly acknowledged reacting physically during the confrontation but maintained, according to Marawa's account, that he felt compelled to defend himself.
However, the allegations and details shared by the broadcaster represent Komphela's reported version of events. They have not been independently verified, and Bianchi's account was not included in Marawa's explanation.
The reported incident has attracted attention within South African and African football, particularly given the positions held by the two coaches and the seriousness of the allegations being discussed.
Questions remain about what exactly was said during the exchange, what triggered the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding Bianchi's reported hospital visit.
For now, Komphela's reported explanation offers one perspective on the incident, but a complete understanding of what happened will require further clarification from the parties involved. Neither the allegations of racism nor the competing accounts should be treated as established facts without additional evidence.
