Sundowns Boss Breaks Silence on Giving Winger Second Chance After Exile

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has sent shockwaves through South African football after revealing the deep emotional and tactical reasons behind Monnapule Saleng’s unexpected return from the cold!

The former Orlando Pirates superstar finally made his long-awaited first competitive appearance of the season during Tuesday’s tense 1-0 Carling Knockout Cup victory over Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld.

Saleng’s high-profile move to Chloorkop had turned into a nightmare after a series of serious disciplinary breaches left him banished from first-team duties.

From missing the crucial second leg of the CAF Champions League final to failing to report for pre-season training, the winger spent months training entirely in isolation.

However, after intense internal discussions involving Cardoso, the sporting director, team captains, and the club chairman, Sundowns agreed to reintegrate the outcast star.

Speaking after the final whistle, Cardoso made it clear that Sundowns operates on human values rather than permanent exclusion.

"First of all, I always told you that those are the values I found inside this club and those are the values I share and multiply with my players. We don't allow ourselves to exclude a human being, a person, out of the process," Cardoso stated passionately.

The Portuguese mentor revealed that bringing Saleng off the bench late in the match—instead of introducing a defensive player to park the bus and protect the 1-0 lead—was a calculated statement of support.

"I think today we wanted to show him that we trust him and give him the energy to enter the match," Cardoso explained.

"Maybe in the moment it would have been easy for me to put in one player to close the game. I still had the will to say 'go there.' It's a proof of trust and a little bit of energy also to feel that we are here for him when he needs."

Despite the emotional reunion, Cardoso issued a stern warning, confirming that Saleng will receive zero special treatment moving forward. With brutal competition in the Sundowns attack, the winger’s future remains strictly tied to his daily discipline and match performance.

"He made his effort," Cardoso added. "He will have his chances according to the performance that will be continuously evaluated like all the other players. If he becomes consistent, he will have more chances. If he has fluctuations, he will have less chances."

As Saleng takes his first steps toward rebuilding his career, Chloorkop faithful will be watching closely to see if the winger can recapture his former glory.

Did Miguel Cardoso make the right call by bringing Monnapule Saleng back into the fold, or should Sundowns have kept a hard line on discipline? Drop your thoughts in the comment section below, hit the like button, and share this story with fellow football fans
