South African Coach Makes History In Egypt

South African coach Rulani Mokwena is continuing to make waves in Egyptian football after guiding Pyramids FC to a historic winning run that has established him as one of the most impressive coaches on the continent this season.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor made history after leading Pyramids to 11 consecutive victories in competitive matches, becoming the first coach in the club’s history to achieve the feat at the start of a season.

Mokwena’s latest triumph came on Tuesday night when Pyramids defeated Al Gaish 4-1 in the Egyptian Premier League, extending their remarkable run and strengthening their position at the summit of the standings.

The 39-year-old has enjoyed a dream start since taking charge of the Egyptian giants in July, winning every competitive match he has overseen so far.

His impact has been particularly evident in the league, where Pyramids have collected 21 points from their opening seven matches. The impressive tally puts them ahead of Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly and Zamalek, who are both trailing on 16 points.

Mokwena’s achievement is even more significant considering the club’s previous records. Former coaches Hossam Hassan and Ramon Diaz also enjoyed unbeaten starts of 11 matches, but neither managed to win all 11 fixtures.

Hassan recorded six victories and five draws, while Diaz registered seven wins and four draws. Mokwena has surpassed both records by maintaining a perfect winning sequence.

The former Sundowns coach arrived in Egypt with a reputation for attacking football and tactical innovation, having previously won several major trophies in South Africa. His success at Sundowns included four league titles and the inaugural African Football League crown.

He also gained valuable international experience through spells at Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco, MC Alger in Algeria and Al-Ittihad in Libya.

Now, Mokwena appears determined to build another successful project in Egypt, where expectations are high following Pyramids’ recent rise in African football.

However, maintaining this momentum will be his biggest challenge as the season progresses and pressure intensifies.

With the Egyptian Premier League title and continental honours within reach, Mokwena has given South African football supporters another reason to follow his coaching journey abroad.

His historic start has already secured his place in Pyramids’ record books, but the coach will be determined to turn this remarkable run into silverware.
