From Chiefs to Pirates: 14-Year-Old “Messi” Wonderkid Takes a Huge Step Forward

At only 14 years old, Jacob Serman is already attracting attention in Gauteng football after earning an opportunity to train with Orlando Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) squad. The talented youngster, who has earned the nickname “Messi” because of his impressive skills and natural flair on the ball, is making remarkable progress in his football journey.

Serman’s rise has become even more interesting because he joined the Buccaneers from their fierce Soweto rivals, Kaizer Chiefs. The move has caught the attention of supporters from both clubs, adding another talking point to the rivalry between the two South African football giants.

Last season, the young attacker featured for Orlando Pirates in the RCLFA Premier League, which forms part of South Africa’s fifth tier of football. His performances reportedly showcased the technical ability and creativity behind his “Messi” nickname, helping him take another step towards a more competitive level of the game.

Training with the DDC squad represents a significant opportunity for the teenager, allowing him to work alongside some of the club’s promising young players. Although moving from lower-league football to the DStv Diski Challenge is a major challenge, his progress suggests that he is eager to prove himself against some of the country’s best emerging talents.

At 14, Serman still has plenty of time to develop his game, but his growing opportunities have given Pirates supporters reason to be excited. His journey is particularly noteworthy because he arrived from their biggest rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, before progressing through the Buccaneers’ ranks.

As he continues to gain experience and impress during training, attention will be on whether the young attacker can turn this opportunity into a breakthrough at a higher level. For now, Jacob Serman appears to be a promising talent whose football journey is only just beginning.
