Michael Essien’s Wife’s Como Takeover Ended in Bankruptcy Before Club’s Rise to €500 Million

The story of Como 1907’s remarkable transformation began with a controversial ownership chapter involving Akosua Puni Essien, the wife of former Chelsea and Ghana midfielder Michael Essien.

In March 2017, Como were struggling financially and competing in Italy’s lower divisions. With bankruptcy looming, Akosua Puni Essien acquired the club’s assets for approximately €237,000, making headlines as a foreign female entrepreneur entering Italian football ownership.

However, her ownership period proved short-lived. Despite the acquisition, the club faced significant financial challenges. Puni Essien reportedly failed to provide the necessary financial guarantees required by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), resulting in Como being denied admission to Serie C.

The club subsequently went bankrupt and was forced to restart its operations in Serie D, Italy’s fourth tier.

Como’s fortunes began to change in 2019 when Indonesian billionaire brothers Robert and Michael Hartono took over through their Djarum Group investment company.

Their financial backing and long-term investment helped establish a new foundation for the club’s growth and eventual return to prominence.

Today, Como have experienced a remarkable resurgence, attracting international attention and establishing themselves as a significant force in Italian football.

The club’s valuation is now reportedly estimated at more than €500 million, highlighting the extraordinary contrast between its financial struggles in 2017 and its current status.
