EX-CHIEFS star stuns Dortmund in champions League

Aden McCarthy Scores First Sabah FK Goal Against Dortmund But Suffers Champions League Defeat

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy made a memorable contribution to Sabah FK’s UEFA Champions League campaign after scoring his first goal for the Azerbaijani club against German giants Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night. However, his impressive effort was not enough to prevent Sabah from suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

The South African defender found the back of the net in the 39th minute, helping his team recover from an early setback and giving the home supporters reason to believe they could secure a positive result against one of Germany’s biggest football clubs.

Despite McCarthy’s important contribution, Dortmund eventually secured all three points thanks to a second-half goal from striker Serhou Guirassy.

McCarthy Delivers Against German Giants

Dortmund started the encounter strongly and took the lead in the 10th minute through Guirassy, who reacted quickly to a rebound after goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov had initially denied Felix Nmecha.

Sabah refused to surrender and gradually grew into the contest, creating opportunities as they searched for an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off in the 39th minute when McCarthy rose above the Dortmund defence to connect with a well-delivered free-kick from Tymoteusz Puchacz. The former Kaizer Chiefs academy product directed a powerful header beyond goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to level matters at 1-1.

The goal marked a significant personal milestone for McCarthy, who has been given an opportunity to establish himself at Sabah following his move away from South African football.

His performance also offered a positive talking point for South African football supporters following his transition to European competition.

Guirassy Breaks Sabah's Resistance

The teams went into the half-time interval level, but Dortmund regained the advantage shortly after the restart.

Guirassy struck again in the 53rd minute, finishing Joey Veerman's precise cross to complete his brace and restore the visitors' lead.

Sabah continued pushing forward in search of another equaliser, but Dortmund managed to protect their advantage and secure a hard-fought victory.

Although the Azerbaijani side showed determination, they were ultimately unable to convert their attacking efforts into another goal.

A Positive Moment for South African Football

For McCarthy, the defeat will undoubtedly be disappointing, but scoring against a club of Dortmund's stature represents an encouraging moment in his developing career.

The defender has now demonstrated his ability to contribute offensively on one of European football's biggest stages.

While Sabah will need to regroup after the setback, McCarthy can take confidence from his performance as the club continues its Champions League journey.

South African supporters will be hoping the former Kaizer Chiefs player builds on this achievement and continues making his mark abroad.

His first goal for Sabah may not have delivered a victory, but it provided a memorable personal highlight on a challenging European night.
