Robert Marawa Takes Aim at Ramaphosa Over Support for Rwanda’s 2030 F1 Bid

South African sports broadcaster Robert Marawa has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa following his expression of support for Rwanda’s bid to host a Formula One (F1) race in 2030.

The issue gained attention after journalist Sophie Mokoena shared information indicating that South Africa supported Rwanda as the proposed host of the major international motorsport event. Marawa reacted to the development by questioning the president’s priorities and urging him to concentrate more on the challenges facing South Africans.

The broadcaster’s response appeared to highlight his concerns about whether the country’s leadership is giving sufficient attention to domestic issues while supporting major sporting ambitions elsewhere on the continent.

Rwanda has been working to position itself as a destination for major international sporting events, with the proposed Formula One race forming part of its broader ambitions to attract tourists, investors and global attention.

If successful, Rwanda’s bid could mark an important moment for African motorsport, as the continent seeks to return to the Formula One calendar after decades without hosting a Grand Prix.

However, Marawa’s criticism has shifted attention towards the responsibilities of South Africa’s president and the expectations citizens have of their leaders. His reaction has also sparked a wider conversation about the balance between supporting other African countries and addressing challenges at home.

Ramaphosa’s backing of Rwanda’s proposal does not automatically mean that South Africa’s domestic problems are being neglected. Nevertheless, Marawa’s comments reflect the scrutiny political leaders face when they express support for major international projects.

The exchange has also highlighted the broader debate about Africa’s efforts to attract prestigious sporting events and whether governments are doing enough to address the everyday concerns of their own citizens.

As discussions surrounding Rwanda’s 2030 Formula One ambitions continue, Marawa’s reaction has brought renewed attention to the question of national priorities and leadership accountability.
