Motsepe Foundation Championship side Gomora United have been punished with a three-point deduction after being found guilty of breaching a league regulation in August, dealing a setback to the club’s campaign.
The sanction highlights the importance of complying with competition rules in South African football, where administrative violations can have a direct impact on a team’s league position and its ambitions for the season.
The controversy centres on Rule 35.2 of the National Soccer League Handbook, which requires Motsepe Foundation Championship clubs to include at least five South African-eligible Under-23 players on their match sheets and maintain a minimum of two Under-23 players on the pitch throughout the game.
The breach occurred during Gomora United’s August 29 fixture against Venda FC at Malamulele Stadium. Gomora initially won the match 1-0 through a goal from Tiklas Thutlwa, but Venda lodged a protest after substitutions left Gomora with only one Under-23 player on the field.
Following the disciplinary proceedings, the Premier Soccer League awarded Venda FC a 3-0 victory and the full three points, overturning Gomora’s original result.
Gomora United chairman Joe Seanego acknowledged the ruling, describing the situation as difficult while indicating that the club would work to recover the lost points through future performances.
The punishment has affected Gomora’s position in the league standings, underlining how administrative mistakes can have serious sporting consequences even after a team has secured victory on the pitch.
For Venda FC, the decision provides an important boost in their efforts to move away from the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Gomora must now concentrate on upcoming fixtures as they attempt to rebuild their points tally.
The case also serves as a warning to other clubs in the division about the importance of monitoring player eligibility and ensuring that substitutions comply with competition regulations.
