Bafana Star Mbokazi Makes MLS History With Stunning Fourth-Place Ranking
South African football continues to make its mark on the international stage, with Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi earning impressive recognition after being ranked fourth in Major League Soccer’s (MLS) prestigious 22 Under 22 list for 2026.
The MLS officially unveiled its annual rankings on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, highlighting some of the most exciting young talents competing in the North American league. Mbokazi’s inclusion among the top four represents another significant milestone in the rising defender’s career.
The 21-year-old, who represents Chicago Fire FC, has established himself as one of the league’s most promising young players since making the move from South African football to the United States.
His fourth-place finish also makes him the highest-ranked defender on this year’s list, underlining the impact he has made in a competition featuring talented young footballers from different backgrounds.
The rankings were determined through votes from an expert panel comprising MLS coaches, general managers, sporting directors, selected media representatives and MLS on Apple TV talent. This makes Mbokazi’s achievement particularly notable, as his performances have earned recognition from people closely involved in the game.
Leading the 2026 rankings is Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan, followed by Red Bull New York forward Julian Hall and midfielder Adri Mehmeti. Mbokazi occupies fourth position, ahead of Orlando City forward Justin Ellis, who completes the top five.
The achievement is a major boost for South African football, particularly as Mbokazi continues to establish himself in one of North America’s leading professional competitions.
The former Orlando Pirates defender has enjoyed a remarkable rise from the South African domestic game to the international stage. His development has also attracted attention through his performances for Bafana Bafana, where he has demonstrated his ability to compete against quality opposition.
According to MLS, Mbokazi leads the 22 Under 22 class with 15 senior international caps, including four appearances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His international experience places him among the most accomplished players in this year’s selection.
The annual list recognises the league’s most promising young players and provides an indication of the talent expected to shape MLS in the coming years. The 2026 selection features 22 footballers representing 16 clubs, with an average age of approximately 20.
For Chicago Fire, Mbokazi’s ranking represents another positive development in a season during which the defender has strengthened his reputation. The club also highlighted that his fourth-place finish marks the fifth time a Chicago Fire player has featured inside the ranking’s top five.
For South African supporters, the recognition offers further evidence that locally developed players can make a successful transition to international football. Mbokazi’s progress could also inspire younger defenders hoping to follow a similar pathway.
Although the ranking is an individual accolade, it reflects the work invested in his development and the opportunities he has embraced since moving abroad.
At just 21, Mbokazi still has considerable room to improve. His challenge now will be to maintain his consistency, continue developing at Chicago Fire and translate his growing reputation into further success for club and country.
His fourth-place ranking is more than a personal milestone; it is another proud moment for Bafana Bafana and South African football.
