Angolan club Wiliete SC have described their victory over South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns as more than just a football result, saying the achievement reflects the values of hard work, discipline, ambition and purpose.

The victory has attracted attention because of Sundowns’ reputation as one of the leading clubs in African football. The South African side have regularly competed in continental competitions, making Wiliete’s achievement a significant moment for the Angolan club.

In a statement reflecting on the result, the club emphasised the broader meaning of the victory and its potential impact on football in Angola.

"More than just a victory, this achievement demonstrates that greatness is built with hard work, discipline, ambition, and purpose, establishing Wiliete as an inspiration for Angolan football."

The statement highlighted the importance of dedication and collective effort in achieving success, particularly when facing opponents with greater continental experience and established reputations.

For Wiliete, the result provides an opportunity to strengthen its profile beyond Angola and demonstrate the quality developing within the country’s domestic game. Performances against recognised opponents can also help raise the visibility of Angolan clubs and encourage greater confidence among local players and supporters.

Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, remain one of South Africa’s most prominent football institutions, with considerable expectations attached to their performances in domestic and continental competitions. A defeat against Wiliete therefore gives the result added significance for supporters following both clubs.

Wiliete’s message also focused on the possibility of inspiring other teams and young footballers across Angola. The club presented the achievement as evidence that determination, preparation and a clear sense of purpose can help teams compete against more established opposition.

Although one result does not determine a club’s long-term standing, the victory offers Wiliete an important moment to celebrate and build upon.

The Angolan side will now look to maintain its progress, while the result serves as another reminder of the competitive nature of African football.
