Kwanele Kopo Reveals How He Convinced Ronwen Williams Not To Quit Football After His Brother’s Death

Ronwen Williams, goalkeeper for Mamelodi Sundowns and captain of the Bafana Bafana, nearly gave up on football after his older brother Marvin died in a tragic accident. However, his career was saved by the intervention of Kwanele Kopo, a former coach of Williams's.

During one of Williams's lowest points, Kopo had the heartfelt talk that ultimately persuaded him to get back into the sport.

While Williams was still a young player at the SuperSport United academy in 2010, the tragic incident happened. Tragically, the news of the young goalkeeper's brother's death reached the squad as they were traveling to Cape Town for the Bayhill Under-19 tournament.

Without delay, Williams was airlifted back to Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth, so he could reunite with his family. Kopo said that after his terrible loss, the club initially let him take a month off to grieve and get back on his feet.

But when the period ended, Williams still hadn't come back. He was contemplating giving up on the game completely due to how profoundly the grief had impacted him.

After some time had passed, Kopo allegedly reached out to the young goalkeeper, begging him to change his mind. In his efforts to convince Williams to go back to the academy and follow his football dreams, he also spoke with Williams' mother.

The idea that Williams could honor his late brother by continuing to play football, according to Kopo, was the message that ultimately struck a chord with Williams.

In light of the tragedy, he reminded the goalie that Marvin would not have wanted him to give up anything he loved.

Although Williams's return to football did not happen right away, the encouragement gave him the motivation he needed to keep going.

Williams has since become a prominent figure for Mamelodi Sundowns and one of the most renowned goalkeepers in South Africa. He has captained Bafana Bafana.

The goalkeeper's commitment to remembering his brother through his on-field accomplishments adds a profoundly personal dimension to his journey.
